WITSummer Early Childhood Program

WITS Summer Early Childhood is back! On Tuesday, July 5th the WITS staff and volunteer team kicked off programs at six Chicago Public School sites – McClellan Elementary, Walsh Elementary, McCutcheon Elementary, Jordan Elementary, and DeDiego Elementary. Together, we are supporting Kindergarten readiness through themed read-alouds, art projects, dramatic play, and writing activities.

Each week of WITS Summer Early Childhood focuses on a new fairy tale and its various adaptations, beginning with The Billy Goats Gruff. When students are familiar with a story and its characters, they are more readily able to make connections between texts, make predictions, and retain vocabulary. Best of all, students are having a blast building the troll’s bridge out of Playdough, planting seeds to grow grass just like the goats ate, and acting out the story’s dramatic climax when Big Billy Goat knocks the troll into the river!

Another major component to WITS Summer Early Childhood is Zoophonics, an active and multisensory introduction to letters and letter sounds. Zoophonics is reviewed at the beginning and end of the program day, and is reinforced during our Sound and Writing Centers.

WITS Summer Early Childhood runs Monday through Thursdays, 9am-11:30am, July 5th to August 4th.
