The Student & Mentor Spotlight this month features two partners who enjoy reading stories together in the Talcott Elementary School library. Bob Chimis is a long-time WITS volunteer who has brought his enthusiasm to the WITS Kindergarten and Summer Early Childhood program for the last several years. Julian is an energetic kindergartener who enjoys reading stories and spending time with his mentor Bob.
How did you first get involved with WITS? How long have you been a part of WITS?
Bob – I started in March of 2014. I am retired and was looking for a meaningful volunteer activity. I wanted to feel like I was doing something with a purpose in the community.
What is your favorite thing about WITS?
Julian – My favorite part are the books, they are cool and they are very nice in the library.
What do you do when you’re not at WITS? (This could be your job, what you do for fun, or both!)
Bob – Since my wife and I are both retired, every school-day we babysit our grandchildren, Gianna and Jack. I buy them used books from the library to help them with their reading assignments at school. We also baby sit our two other grandchildren, Jacob and Nicholas. My hobbies include playing music on the keyboard, bass, and saxophones. I also enjoy model trains.
Julian – I go home and play Wii U. I love Zelda! I also read books, and do homework, and that’s it!
What is your favorite thing about your reading with your partner?
Bob – I like that Julian is so interested in reading. He can read some words all by himself! He is my book buddy!
Julian – He always reads to me. He tells me “that I know how to read”. It makes me feel happy!
Pizza plays a big role in WITS celebrations. If you could only eat one pizza topping for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Bob – Just cheese pizza!
Julian – I like cheese too!
